Footy Oval Astronomy
Purpose:
Footy Oval Astronomy will bring the wonders of astronomy to a wide audience, in person and online. Mount Burnett Observatory volunteers will take over a football oval to run a free event for the local community and emergency services volunteers. We would use our telescopes to show visitors the night sky and demonstrate that the science of astronomy is accessible to everyone. This will be complemented by indoor activities including astronomy talks, computer simulations of the night sky and objects of interest, information on Indigenous astronomy, a live Facebook stream to allow questions and answers throughout the night, a live band and food vans. The three-hour event would be broadcast to free to air television and Facebook by Channel 31.
