PBS Program Name:
ITCRDCA 19/20 Program 2.2 - Road Safety
Grant Program:
Road Safety Innovation Fund Round One Open Round 2020
Grant Activity:
Identify if artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning (DL) models can be applied to thermal imaging data, to identify brake defects in heavy vehicles on Australian roads
Purpose:
While all heavy vehicles need to enter a Heavy Vehicle Safety Station (HVSS), only a very small percentage are selected for further screening. Similar to other road safety initiatives, such as random breath testing, the heavy vehicles that are identified for more detailed inspection are selected on a semi-randomised basis. The use of thermal imaging technology as a preliminary screening tool could enable a more targeted approach for inspections to be conducted. This can improve the efficiency of inspection personnel and dramatically increase the number of defects detected.
