Grant Program:
Saving Native Species Fund
Grant Activity:
Development of 1-shot vaccine implants to protect koalas against Chlamydia
Purpose:
Our current vaccine requires an initial vaccination and a booster immunization 30 days later. This can be problematic as wild koalas must be housed for the 30 days or released and recaptured for the booster immunization. In this project we will develop and test a transformative vaccine implant technology to be given at the time of the primary immunization that automatically delivers the booster vaccination 4-5 weeks later without the need for recapture. This technology will significantly increase our ability to vaccinate wild koalas to protect against chlamydial infections, a major cause of infertility and contributor to population decline.
