Grant Activity:
Upgrade of Fluorescent lighting & increase solar system
Purpose:
Our plan is to replace 49 existing fluorescent light fittings and increase the capacity of our current solar system from 5kw to10kw. There are 49 lights inside the hall and 10 external security lights which operate on a day night switch. Following the advice of our electrician on the savings we would be able to achieve by replacing our 30 year old fluorescent lighting with LED lighting we replaced 10 lights with LEDS in August 2020 and the saving in the cost of electricity was soon apparent. Our electricity account definitely became cheaper! We planned to replace the remaining fluorescent lights in stages as funds became available before we were made aware of the current grant scheme after our Secretary read about it in the newspaper. We have found that the current 5kw solar system installed a number of years ago at our cost, reduced electricity supply costs considerably however we have the roof capacity to install another 5kw system which we anticipate will reduce our electricity purchase from the grid to near zero during daylight hours thus reducing our costs even further. Our roof lends itself to the installation of further solar panels and as we have 2 Phase connection to the grid we are entitled to a 5kw system per phase i.e. 10kw is the total allowable input to the grid. Our aim in the future is to purchase storage batteries which will enable us to become self sufficient as regards electricity supply for our premises. Living in tropical North Queensland our premises are air–conditioned. We have two large air–conditioning systems in the main hall area and another smaller split system in the preparation of food area. The larger system is 150,000btu and the other system is 120,000btu. These air–conditioners use a considerable amount of electricity when in operation which is approximately 9 months of the year. The extra solar system will generate enough electricity to give us substantial savings.
