South Australian Glossy Black-Cockatoo Post-fire Recovery
Kangaroo Island is home to the only remaining population of South Australian glossy-black-cockatoos (Calyptorhynchus lathami halmaturinus) (GBC).This project will undertake emergency interventions to safeguard the Kangaroo Island GBC population following the 2019-2020 bushfires. Recovery actions will include strategic restoration of feeding and nesting habitat in priority areas, protection of nestlings from nest predators and competitors, and monitoring of breeding success, flock movement and adult survival to guide our restoration efforts. The objectives of this project are to ensure a viable GBC population persists on Kangaroo Island, and to increase the available feeding and nesting habitat to support long-term population recovery.
