Grant Activity:
The microbial ecology of the upper airways in children
Purpose:
I will study how bacteria found in the nose and throat influence the risk of pneumonia in young children. I will study bacteria as part of an ecosystem, rather than looking at isolated bacteria. I am interested how bacteria interact and how viral infections or antibiotics may change the bacterial ecology. This will help us understand why and how pneumonia develops, allow us to develop tools to predict which children will be at risk, and identify new ways of preventing or treating pneumonia.
