Grant Program:
Powering Communities
Grant Activity:
Grace Centre Solar Power
Purpose:
Grace Church is enhancing the Grace Centre as a community hub, with meeting rooms, office space and a commercial kitchen offering emergency food relief and hospitality training. With an upgraded kitchen on target for a 2022 launch, the Grace Board is looking to mitigate the expense of additional power costs and to maximise our use of renewable energy. Installation of a solar system in the next 8 months, in conjunction with the kitchen redevelopment, is a perfect fit. The Grace Centre has an expansive roof area and is very well suited to a solar installation. The new system will power the kitchen during the day when its most utilised, so batteries wont be required. The new kitchen will be fitted out with state–of–the–art, energy–efficient equipment and using solar energy via a newly installed Solarhart Premium13.2 kW PV System (this application) to run it will provide a high–profile example to the local Clarence Plains community of the use of renewable energy. Partnering with Loaves–and–Fishes–Tasmania and One Community Together in Clarence Plains the kitchen will provide (1) training for at–risk young people in food preparation and hospitality and (2) a consistent supply of nutritious meal portions to any Tasmanian community organisation working with our most vulnerable community members. We will create a sustainable community–based social enterprise to provide consistent support and resource for those working in food security. We aim to strengthen the engagement and partnerships between food suppliers and those working with the vulnerable. We will provide support, opportunity and training pathways for socially excluded and at–risk Tasmanians.
