Grant Activity:
Blocking harmful lung damage during acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) caused by infections
Purpose:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) affects over 2 million Australians and acute attacks, triggered by viruses or bacteria, can be fatal. Standard treatment with steroids is highly damaging to the lungs and safer treatments are urgently needed. Our team of leading clinical and basic science COPD researchers has identified a new drug with the potential to improve patient outcomes. Our pioneering studies will break the connection between COPD attacks, infections, lung damage and death.
