An accessible chronic pain therapeutic target in peripheral sensory nerves
Purpose:
Chronic pain is hugely debilitating and its prevention remains an area of unmet clinical need. Nerve injuries result in exaggerated responses to painful, and even mild, stimuli. In pre-clinical models, we have discovered that removing a single protein from neurons, either throughout the nervous system or only in the peripheral nervous system, significantly diminishes injury-induced pain. This research aims to find a way to interfere with the development of chronic pain by targeting this protein.
