Wangetti Trail (Queensland) - National Partnership Agreement
The Australian Government will provide $8 million to support stage one of the Wangetti Trail from Port Douglas south to the Mowbray River and part of stage 2, the remaining trail from Mowbray River south to Palm Cove via Wangetti. This commitment together with the $41.4 million commitment by the Queensland Government will see the full trail completed by the end of 2022. The current budget of $41.4 million is inclusive of both capital and operating costs, noting the June 2019. Queensland Government media released stated $36 million (capital costs only).
Approximately 94-kilometres in length, the dual-use walking and mountain biking track travels through Tropical North Queensland’s coast and hinterland from Port Douglas to Palm Cove. The trail will wind through the stunning coastal and hinterland scenery of the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics and Great Barrier Reef. The Wangetti Trail in Queensland will be one of Australia’s leading adventure based ecotourism experiences, attracting significant numbers of international visitors.
The Wangetti Trail may include guided tours, beach connections, unique flora and fauna and public campsites and privately-operated low-impact eco-accommodation. Visitors will be able to walk the trail from Port Douglas to Wangetti Beach over six days and five nights or bike from Wangetti Beach to Palm Cove in one, or up to three days for the full trail.
The Tourism Development Projects Division within the Department of Innovation and Tourism Industry Development will be responsible for implementing the project.
