Projection neuron axon collaterals in the dorsal horn: the missing link in spinal pain processing?
Purpose:
Pathological pain is a debilitating condition that arises from many diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke, arthritis, and diabetes. Despite these far reaching impacts, our current pain treatments remain limited due to our poor understanding on how pain signals pass from the body to the brain. This proposal focuses on an unstudied pathway whereby pain signals sent to the brain are shared with local spinal pain circuits, with the potential to greatly influence pain experience.
