Grant Activity:
Understanding the role of specific virulence features in extra-intestinal E. coli clones
Purpose:
Extra-intestinal E. coli (ExPEC) are a major cause of urinary tract infections, sepsis and neonatal meningitis, and exhibit increasing antibiotic resistance. This project will use advanced molecular genetics and animal infection models to understand the function of key ExPEC virulence factors and how they interact with the host during infection. The outcomes will provide a detailed understanding of the mechanisms that enable ExPEC to cause severe human disease.
