Grant Activity:
Superoxide dismutase one dysfunction: a novel pathogenic mechanism in Parkinson disease
Purpose:
Parkinson disease results from the death of brain cells that control movement, but why they die is unknown. We have discovered a new toxic protein in the brains of Parkinson disease patients that is probably involved in this process. This project will test this idea in an animal model, and also whether a new drug we developed prevents cell death. If so, we will not only know why brain cells die in Parkinson disease, but will also have a treatment for slowing or even halting the disease.
