Grant Activity:
What causes delayed death in malaria parasites?
Purpose:
Antibiotics that kill bacteria have been successfully repurposed to kill the parasites that cause malaria, and are now important elements in malaria control and elimination. These drugs are safe and selective, but kill malaria parasites slowly. Despite their importance, we don’t know how these antibiotics kill parasites, why they are slow acting, or how malarial antibiotic-resistance arises. We will answer these questions, enabling us to design rational antibiotic control regimes for malaria.
