Grant Activity:
Accelerating the identification and treatment of splice-altering mutations underlying inherited retinal diseases
Purpose:
Inherited retinal disease (IRD) is the most common form of blindness in working age adults and children and is caused by errors in the DNA code for genes that are crucial to the healthy retina. We propose a novel method for accelerating discovery of mutations in IRD patients and testing of a new type of genetic drug for the treatment of IRD-causing mutations. To screen these drugs, we will generate retinal cells from patient skin cultures using a method known as cellular reprogramming.
