Grant Activity:
Delineating cortical and medullary self-tolerance mechanisms in the thymus
Purpose:
Our first immune response is introspective. To be able to stave off infections and cancer, our immune systems first need to recognise and tolerate the ~200 different cell types in healthy human bodies. When this process of 'immune self-tolerance' is incomplete, people can develop autoimmune disease. The problem can be a lack of 'peacekeeper' T cells. We study the thymus, where all T cells develop, with a focus on how 'peacekeeper' T cells develop and what makes them effective.
