Grant Activity:
Novel partial glucocorticoid receptor agonists to treat lung immaturity and dysfunction of preterm birth
Purpose:
In Australia, 8.5 percent of babies are born preterm (less than37 weeks) and 1.6 percent (greater than5,000 babies) are born very preterm (less than32 weeks). Complications from preterm birth account for 40 percent of neonatal deaths in Australia, and the care of those that do survive is a most serious and costly problem (AU$800 million/year) in neonatal medicine today. This study will characterise new steroid drugs to treat the respiratory complications of preterm birth but with reduced detrimental side-effects in organs such as the brain.
