Targeted Research
Grant Activity:
Using advanced technologies to investigate the impact of PFAS exposure on the human mucosal barrier and interaction with pre-existing medical conditions
Purpose:
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals that came into wide-spread use in the second half of the twentieth century. The abundance and low biodegradability of PFAS around many sites in Australia has raised important questions about the health effects of long term exposure. We will use new technologies to re-create the mucosal barrier surfaces in the laboratory to screen for the acute and chronic impacts of PFAS exposure both in the healthy and diseased states.
