AGWA's Institute of Contemporary Asian Art – Japan Programs
AGWA’s Institute of Contemporary Asian Art (ICAA) is a new initiative that has received significant five-year funding from the Simon Lee Foundation to create cultural and artistic collaborations and connections between Asia and WA. ICAA presents a unique opportunity to illuminate global thinking, incubate a new generation of artists, and invest in the dissemination of Asian art and ideas.
Japan has been identified as a key region of focus, informed by expanding cultural similarities and a growing demand for Japanese art in WA, providing a timely moment to raise the profile of contemporary Japanese artists.
AGWA and ICAA will generate a cultural exchange program with artists and arts institutions to profile and develop immersive and experiential projects, comprising digital engagement, artist commissions, curatorial projects, public programs, exhibitions, and acquisitions. AGWA will invite Japanese artists to WA to engage in artistic exchange and dialogue, and curate accompanying public programming.
In 2022, ICAA will launch its inaugural Artistic Program that will include artists Daisuke Kosugi, Lieko Shiga and Rinko Kawauchi. In February 2023 we will present the first Australian solo exhibition of work by pioneering Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, and Nara’s first public engagements at an Australian cultural institution.
