Development of Korean Language Education in Western Australian Schools
Korean will be introduced as an ATAR subject in the WA school curriculum from 2023 onwards. The key aim of this project is to support the development and expansion of primary and secondary school Korean language education and provision, and to provide policy-focused research-led policy recommendations to scope out the key barriers and support needs for successful Korean language education in the WA context in the future. The project will appoint a Project Officer/Researcher, who will: identify new potential schools to introduce Korean programs into; coordinate (together with the Korean Language Teachers' Association of WA and KRC team) identifying suitably qualified language teachers to introduce Korean into new schools; coordinate with the Korean Education Centre in Sydney to procure materials for eligible schools to support their teaching of Korean; coordinate regular meetings with language teachers in WA; and conduct a policy-focused research to identify key barriers and support needs for introduction of Korean language programs in WA schools. Through the Korea Research Centre, the project will also provide free Korean language education and learning support to high school students who wish to study for a Korean ATAR but have no such option available in their own school.
