The Great Australian Biodiversity Challenge, 2020
Purpose:
This challenge, open to all Australians, draws attention to an urgent aspect of managing our climate change–induced biome – a lack of comprehensive data on biodiversity. It aims to address this problem by engaging people from all walks of life in a competition that is entertaining, locally relevant and inspirational, while gathering valuable biodiversity data. Players participate in The Great Aussie BioQuest (GreatAussieBioQuest.com) through the QuestaGame mobile app, as an individual or a team, during National Science Week in August. Players submit photos of plants, animals and fungi, which are verified by experts, with feedback and points sent to the player. Entrants have a chance to win a prize, including a trip to Cairns for the Global Earth Guardians Award Ceremony. The biodiversity data collected will contribute to national and international databases for biodiversity mapping and research.
