Powering Communities
Grant Activity:
Solar Panel Installation
Purpose:
Lighthouse Foundation seeks funding to install a 9.9kW solar energy system at our home in Clayton. Lighthouse is projected to save $52,185.14 in energy cost over the 20–year lifespan of this system. The savings will be returned to the Foundation where they will be used to contribute to the cost of Lighthouses Psychological Wellness Program. In this way, the saving will be used to address the cause of and contribute to the elimination of youth homelessness. Lighthouse Foundation programs have been independently assessed by Ernst and Young and Social Ventures Australia (SVA) to break the pattern of homelessness with 8 of 10 young people never experiencing homelessness again after leaving. Furthermore, Lighthouse was assessed as having the highest social value return ($1 spent = $12 of value) of the 130 charities measured by Social Ventures Australia (2011). Electricity prices are one of the largest operational expenses faced by Lighthouse Foundation. With a social value return of 1:12 ($1 spent = $12 of value) the savings resulting from reduced electricity costs will contribute to our ground–breaking work. Furthermore, by protecting against the rising energy costs, the installation of solar panels will improve the sustainability of this property as a Lighthouse Home into the future. By increasing our capacity to generate electricity from the sun, we can also insulate Australia more broadly from price fluctuations in global energy markets, thus this initiative will boost Australia's energy independence. Additionally, this initiative will create jobs and help our local economy because the solar industry is a significant contributor to the Australian economy. The Plan Should Lighthouse Foundation be successful in this application for $7,300 under the Powering Communities Program, we will spend the grant funds to purchase and install solar as specified in the attached quote.
