Grant Activity:
Transposable Elements as regulators of Genome Architecture during in vivo Epigenetic Reprogramming
Purpose:
Much of the mammalian genome is comprised of repetitive sequences that have long been considered as 'junk DNA'. Repetitive elements have the capacity to regulate other DNA sequences that are within close proximity, often with deleterious effects. However recently it has been shown that the repetitive genome has a critical role in normal development, and also in patients with cancer. I will determine how such repetitive elements can be activated, and how they can influence the rest of the genome.
