Grant Activity:
Predicting the impact of antimalarial resistance in West African parasites"¯
Purpose:
Malaria causes significant morbidity and mortality. The majority of the disease burden is in Africa. Resistance to the frontline antimalarial artemisinin has developed in Southeast Asia and is now present in East but not West Africa. Here we will introduce these African resistance mutations into culture-adapted parasites from circulating infections in Ghana (West Africa). This will enable predictions to be made about how these specific mutations will affect drug treatment regimen in West Africa.
