Grant Program:
Bushfire Recovery for Species and Landscapes
Grant Activity:
A genetic approach to conserve two fire-affected alpine skinks
Purpose:
The 2019-2020 bushfires severely impacted the alpine she-oak and Guthega skinks. Both are characterised by fragmented and isolated populations, supported by few breeding individualsresulting in low genetic diversity and high vulnerability. Genetic rescue and translocations are identified as priority conservation actions. Genomic data will assess genetic diversity and the population structure of skinks from three fire-affected areas: Wellington Plains, Bogong High Plains, and Kosciusko National Park. Regions of the genome under selection and neutrally evolving markers will be targeted. Outcomes include a robust understanding of genetic diversity and adaptation among populations to inform on-ground conservation strategies.
