Prioritisation of Eastern Curlew habitat in the Mackay region
Purpose:
The Mackay region has been identified as a non-breeding roosting destination for the critically endangered Eastern Curlew. Using data from the Queensland Wader Study Group, the project intends to map the regional habitats of the Easter Curlew, then apply GIS overlays of human disturbance. This mapping will be used to prioritise strategic in situ community engagement awareness and education and to identify suitable sites for conservation interventions, such as feral animal control, Coastcare beach clean up events and habitat restoration. Reef Catchments has worked with Mackay Regional Council to develop Local Coastal Plans (LCPs) and it is envisaged that the projects legacy outputs will be integrated within future LCPs.
