DCCEEW 21/22 Sustainable Management of Natural Resources and Environment
Grant Program:
Bushfire Recovery for Species and Landscapes
Grant Activity:
Assessing platypuses in fire-impacted areas of SE Qld and Kangaroo Island
Purpose:
The project will evaluate the impacts of the 2019-20 bushfires on platypuses in the rainforests of southeast Queensland and those on Kangaroo Island. In SE QLD, burnt river sections will be surveyed using eDNA to detect the persistence of platypuses. On Kangaroo Island, platypuses will be surveyed along the Rocky River to assess numbers and demographics, complemented by eDNA surveys in adjacent burnt rivers. Communities will be engaged to promote long-term citizen science and conservation and to improve awareness of freshwater conservation. Findings will improve knowledge of the impacts fires pose to platypuses and support identifying priority conservation populations and refuge areas.
