Brighter Futures – Powering Jetty Roadï¿ Children, Families, and Workers
Purpose:
Mission & Background: Yourtown's mission is to enable young people, especially those who are marginalised and without voice, to improve their quality of life. Yourtown has a long–term commitment to children, young people, and families experiencing disadvantage in Brighton and across Tasmania. We currently operate our Social Enterprise and Early Childhood Development programs from the Jetty Road site. Both programs aim to break the cycle of poverty and disadvantage by providing paid work experiences to prepare young people for long–term employment and ensuring young children are developmentally equipped to enter and succeed in school. Project Context: In 2021 FY, yourtown will be undertaking a self–funded capital works project at our Jetty Road service hub with the aim of creating a homely, welcoming embrace for children and families engaging in our Early Childhood Development program. Yourtown takes great pride in providing our services to young people with warmth and care, and we strive to reflect that warmth in our physical service spaces. Young people are more likely to respond positively and engage more deeply with our services when spaces are inviting and human–centred, as well as functional. When young people are more comfortable, yourtown can respond to their needs more effectively, which in turn benefits the surrounding community as they become empowered to seek the help they need. The wholly self–funded project will be undertaken under the authority of Brighton Council and will also involve building new spaces for a community garden and expressive therapy. The purchase and installation of a Solar System will be undertaken concurrently as part of this larger capital works project. The purchase and installation of a 9.99 kW Solar System with 10 kW inverter will enable us to improve the energy efficiency of our Old Jetty Road site, with the dual effect of reducing both our power bill and carbon footprint.
