Achieving benefit without harm: a next-generation glucocorticoid replacement
Purpose:
Over 2% of the world’s population takes long-term steroid therapy to control unwanted immune system activity, despite the predictable, harmful side effects of steroids. A natural anti-inflammatory protein, GILZ, is increased as a result of steroid treatment, which is an important way that steroids work. Our studies will lead to a strategy to develop a drug that increases GILZ without the use of steroids, bringing about the protective effects of steroids without the harmful side effects.
