Grant Activity:
Sugammadex, neostigmine and postoperative pulmonary complications
Purpose:
Pneumonia and other lung complications after surgery are common, distressing and costly. Muscle weakness after surgery increases the risk of lung complications. Sugammadex reverses muscle relaxant drugs better than neostigmine. We propose a large study of surgical patients aged 40 years and over to determine if sugammadex reduces the risk of lung complications compared with neostigmine. This study has the potential to improve outcomes for millions of patients and health services worldwide.
