Grant Activity:
Understanding how platelets prevent fetal and neonatal stroke
Purpose:
Stroke is caused by either abnormal clotting or by unchecked bleeding; both result in devastating damage to the brain, causing death or life-long disability. Newborn children with low platelet numbers are at high risk of bleeding-associated stroke, yet we do not understand why. We hypothesize that the cause is rooted in early development. We will identify when these problems arise and define therapeutic strategies for the prevention or amelioration of neonatal stroke.
