Grant Activity:
IS THE EVOLUTIONARY LOSS OF ACTN3 DETRIMENTAL IN MODERN SOCIETY?
Purpose:
Do you feel the cold or are you happiest in the depths of winter? A common null polymorphism in the skeletal muscle gene ACTN3 (R577X) has been described as a key gene during modern evolution due to its ability to improve muscle function and metabolism following cold exposure. We will explore the impacts of this gene further in modern humans by studying muscles from healthy and obese ACTN3 R577X mice and humans to determine how our ACTN3 genotype influences life in todays modern society.
