Grant Activity:
Impact of polypharmacy and deprescribing on measures of function and biomarkers of ageing biology in mice and humans
Purpose:
Older adults use more medications than ever before, yet these medications can be harmful in old age causing dangerous drug interactions, falls, confusion and death. ‘Deprescribing’ involves slowly stopping medicines that are not needed or may be harmful. This study explores how the use of multiple medications and stopping them affects how older people function. By studying mice and humans, we also explore the intriguing possibility that use of too many medications drives the ageing process.
