Manning River Helmeted Turtle Breeding Facility (ERF-WRR2-011)
The grantee will undertake the following:
- Set up a facility to allow the breeding of the endangered Manning River Helmeted Turtle. The aim is to produce as many hatchling turtles as possible to be released back into the wild to help bolster natural populations and to compliment the already existing breeding program of this species.
- The facility would also act as an insurance population against catastrophic decline in the wild or similar catastrophe at the other breeding facility.
- The facility will house up to 8 adult pairs of turtles in large ponds as well as a separate area to rear approximately 150 hatchlings. The facility will raise the hatchlings until they are approximately 12 months of age. Ultimately hatchlings produced will be returned to the wild in an attempt to increase numbers of this declining species.
