Xiao Lu: Then and Now
"Xiao Lu: Then and Now" is a solo exhibition by the pre-eminent Chinese artist presented by 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art and will be a key visual art event in Sydney Festival's 2019 program. The exhibition will present recent performance works, a new commission, and archival materials relating to the artist's seminal installation/performance work "Dialogue" (1988-1989) in the landmark "China/Avant-Garde" exhibition at the National Art Gallery, Beijing (opened 5 February 1989).
Xiao Lu’s impromptu performance - firing two gunshots at her work, which precipitated the temporary closure of the exhibition - was one of a small number of works by women included in the large exhibition regarded as a climax of the artistic experimentation that had taken place during the 1980s. The exhibition and associated performances and public programs will examine Xiao Lu’s practice and life trajectory, including her extended period of residence in Sydney and ongoing connection to Australia.
