Reimagining the Japan Relationship
Japan has been the anchor of Australia’s relationships in Asia, built on the strategic decisions both countries took in the past 70 years. The large bilateral relationship sees Australia supply over half of Japan’s key industrial materials and over a quarter of its entire energy needs but it also an economic and political partnership that frames both countries’ interests in the open regional and global multilateral order. Building up to a longer term joint study with Japan, this project proposes an Australian-based report that will review Australia’s engagement with Japan, and benchmark it against Australia’s other important relationships. Institutional innovations and investments that have improved other key relationships will be identified for potential adoption in the Australia-Japan relationship. Wide stakeholder and community consultations will help identify gaps that Australia can fill in its Japan-literacy and engagement with Japan.
