PBS Program Name:
DISR 18/19 Supporting Science and Commercialisation
Grant Program:
Square Kilometre Array Radio Telescope Project
Grant Activity:
SKA Radio TelescopePre–construction activities
Purpose:

The purpose of the grant aims to assist with the design and development work for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) during the bridging phase. The primary work elements of this project are: Simulation and Analysis work package: Led by Curtin Professor David Davidson, this work package includes the modelling and simulation of arrays comprising bowtie dipole and SKALA4 antennas. The primary objective of the work package is to investigate and report on the ‘calabratability’ for SKA-LOW stations. Commissioning and Test: This activity provides the link between the instrument delivery activities of the Early Prototype Arrays Project, and the ‘Simulation and Analysis’ activities. It will provide for a two-way, reciprocal, flow of information-translating simulation and analysis outcomes into implementation requirements, and supporting simulation and analysis with field derived data. It includes all of the tasks required to qualify hardware and systems for deployment to the MRO, and all field-based testing. SKA Project support: Curtin’s prominence in pre-consturction phase discussions of system level construction and operations planning has also led to its recruitment to formally participate in these activities through the Bridging phase in the lead up to construction.
