China-Namoi Engagement Project
A report completed by the Regional Australia Institute in 2015 suggested the Councils in the Namoi region could influence economic growth if they focused on six levers. The list of levers included: engaging in international markets, supporting agriculture and innovation and to commence branding and marketing to position the region. Agriculture is the Namoi region's primary industry and the region is renown for beef, lamb, wool, cotton, grains, dairy and timber. The global demand for food and agriculture is well documented.
In March 2018, the Councils signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on trade, investment and opportunity with the Ningbo Agricultural Bureau. The Ningbo region has a population of 7.5 million people, with a large Government owned bond warehouse and is the largest seaport in China. This next phase of the project will build the Government-to-Government relationship and develop bilateral trade opportunities between businesses.
