Grant Program:
Powering Communities
Grant Activity:
Museum Solar Power
Purpose:
1. The installation of solar power at the museum will provide significant benefits to our community organisation.
2. The Society's volunteers operate a museum near the Visitors Information Centre, cares for a large archival collection related to Yass Valley and provides an educational role within the
wider community through seminars and other activities. The collections include objects of national importance such as the large Hamilton Hume collection of furniture, objects, and
documents.
3. The museum's electricity supply is charged at business rates even though we are not a business, We are a registered charity. It is not financially viable to open the museum to the public
during winter (from June to October ) due to the cost of increased power consumption. However during this time new exhibitions are developed and maintenance on the building is
undertaken by volunteers in a building that for the most part is not heated. During our October to June opening period volunteers contribute an average of 20 hours per week in the
building opening to the public, cleaning and cataloguing the collection.
4. Our archives are currently located on the first floor of the Soldiers Memorial Hall and may have to be relocated to the museum due to the future refurbishment and uncertainty of tenure of the hall. With the archives volunteers currently contributing around 45 hours per week the increased electricity consumption would put an even greater strain on finances.
