Just Say No to the Just in Case Cannula: An Implementation Science Trial with Roadmap for National Roll Out
Purpose:
Have you or your family ever waited for care in an ED and wondered what the nurses and doctors were doing? They may have been inserting a ‘Just In Case Cannula’ (IV), in the belief that they were being safe, caring clinicians. However, IVs are painful to insert, have serious side effects and come at a high cost. Up to half of IVs are not used for any treatment. We plan to improve cannula use and safety in EDs nationally. We will ensure value for money, reduce waste and drive national uptake.
