Purpose:
The Management Committee of Midway Road Community House Inc. has mad e the decision to move the house, and its activities, in a sustainable direction. To this end the house has changed its toilet and cistern to a low flush model and has changed the main refrigerator for the house to a new 3.5 star energy rating model. In addition, all lighting is currently being reviewed and is changing to LED globes. In addition to this, the house has established a sustainable garden where vegetables and other plants are grown by volunteers alongside of visiting members of the surrounding community. This is an attempt by Midway to educate members of the community of sustainable growing practices, so they can replicate these in their own gardens and, in so doing, provide food for themselves and others. The food grown at Midway is, in the main, then given away via a Grow Cart placed at the front entry to the property on an ongoing basis. This aspect has now become a large part of Midway's monthly Market Day, held on a Wednesday at the beginning of each month. In addition to this, Midway runs classes on sustainability to supplement the activities occurring there.
This project is to provide Midway Community House Inc with a functional solar system to allow a valuable reduction in electricity costs for the House. This will also move Midway further in a sustainable direction, in line with the perspective adopted by the Management Committee. Those funds saved will then be used to support existing ongoing programs at Midway and will provide some scope for additional activities and assisting our overall outreach perspective.
