Masterpieces of Contemporary Australian Literature
Purpose:

This is a 10-year project to translate and publish Australian contemporary novels in Japanese with the aim of introducing a wide variety of Australian literature and its richness to Japanese readers. The selection of the series has been taken initiatives of by two authorities of Australian literature, Prof. Kate Darian-Smith (Melbourne Univ.) and Prof. emeritus Yasue Arimitsu (Doshisha Univ.).
Prof. Arimitsu is one of the leading members of Australian Studies Association of Japan, and she is known as the best exponent of Australian literature in Japan.

Since its first volume "Remembering Babylon" by David Malouf, the series has published "Breath" by Tim Winton, "The Slap" by Christos Tsiolkas, "The Secret River" by Kate Grenville, "That Deadman Dance " by Kim Scott, "This House of Grief" by Helen Garner, and "Questions of Travel" by Michell de Kretser. In 2022-2023, we will complete this series by publish Alexis Wright's "Odyssey of the Horizon", which is a Australia-China-Japan co-publication project, and will organize a book launch event inviting the author to Japan to commemorate this publication and completion of the series.
