Grant Program:
Powering Communities
Grant Activity:
Installation of solar panels and an inverter
Purpose:
The design, purchase and installation of a new photovoltaic generator system more commonly known as the purchase an installation of 26 440W solar panels on the North Western facing aspect of the roof of the Shed and an inverter to generate electricity for the Shed during daylight hours when the Shed is open. Solar power without the need for batteries is ideal for the Men's Shed because the Shed is open 6 days per week from 9.00am until 4.30pm, when the power generated from solar panels is at its peak. The purchase and installation of solar panels and an inverter to cover the present and projected future electricity needs of the Shed will to reduce the impact on the environment and make the Shed as self–sufficient as possible in relation to its electricity needs. The 241 members of the Shed will benefit from using solar power to operate the Shed machinery, as will the community as a whole with the savings in greenhouse emissions. The Shed machinery uses a lot of power to recycle timber from demolition sites and produce useful wooden items for the community. At present the power is provided from non–renewable sources. Reduced electricity costs will enable the Shed to increase its output and to support community projects It is expected that solar power will reduce the Shed's reliance on powering machinery from WA grid electricity by at least 80% and reduce the environmental impact of using power from non–renewable sources to manufacture wooden products from recycled timber. The current power costs of around $5,000 per annum will be compared with the costs after the installation of solar power. Power bills totalling less than $1,000 for the year after installation will be a measure of success.
