Releasing Macquarie Perch and Restoring Fish Habitat in Bushfire...
Landcare Australia in collaboration with Native Fish Australia (NFA) and OzFish will:
- Undertake restoration of 20km of riparian habitat impacted by bushfires at sites across QLD, NSW and VIC, through the OzFish community network targeting habitat improvements for 1 turtle, 5 fish and 4 crayfish species listed as priority matters. Citizen science will be used to assess the success of these projects;
- Collect mature Macquarie Perch (under licence) to be used in a release breeding program. The NFA’s endangered fish hatchery at La Trobe University Melbourne will be used to produce fry. The Macquarie Perch fry will be grown until they reach a suitable size and released into Buffalo River to support the persistence of a wild population.
