Grant Activity:
Eliminating HIV-infected macrophages; a neglected problem in HIV cure research
Purpose:
HIV cannot currently be cured due to the persistence of ‘silent’ sources of HIV hidden within certain cells which are not sensitive to anti-HIV drugs. One type of immune cell that HIV hides in are called macrophages, and these cells are very hard for the immune system to destroy. We will study HIV infection in macrophages and identify ways to ‘wake up’ silent HIV in these cells and weaken them so that they can be eliminated from the body.
