Purpose:
Access Your Ability will target 20 people with disability who wish to work and need assistance to build work capacity and gain work experience in order to secure employment. The participants will not be receiving assistance through an employment service provider and the project will allow them to explore if they are ready and capable to work a minimum capacity of 8 hours per week. The project will run over 5 months, providing 4 groups of 5 participants 1 week of tailored pre–employment mentoring, soft skills training, a local labour market presentation and role specific preparation that will lead into 3 weeks of work experience with in–work support provided by the project manager. It is hoped that by the end of the project, the participants work capacity will have increased to at least 8 hours per week and they can transition to a job (target of 50%) or gain valuable work experience and referrals to employment services such as Disability Employment Services or jobactive for further supports that will assist them to gain employment in the near future (a target of 25%). To further improve the attitudes of Fraser Coast businesses towards employment of people with disability, the project also incorporates disability employment awareness workshops delivered at Hervey Bay and Maryborough chamber of commerce events. These will provide an overview of local disability resources available, understanding of disability inclusion in the labour force, steps businesses can take to implement disability friendly recruitment practices and addresses concerns around cost and risk associated with employing people with disability in the open workplace. The project will target at least 30 businesses to participate, delivered over 3 sessions.
