Advancing Australian human challenge trials for priority pathogens
Purpose:
In human challenge models, healthy volunteers are given a carefully monitored infection, with healthcare support, to learn how diseases work and how to stop them. I built the world’s only strep throat human model and will use it to test vaccines to stop Strep A diseases, which affect ~1 billion people and kill >500,000 annually. I will build challenge models for other important diseases (like pneumonia) and work with the public and participants to maximise the impact of this kind of research.
