Grant Activity:
The Bininj Djenj Project: Fish, waterways and environmental change
Purpose:
The Alligator Rivers region in the Northern Territory is vulnerable to environmental change, with rising sea levels a threat to the local World Heritage listed freshwater wetlands. The Bininj Djenj Project will train citizen scientists to work in partnership with researchers and teachers to collect data on local fish populations and water quality, thus assisting in monitoring the health of the local hydrological systems. Data on modern fish species will be compared with ancient fish remains from the 65,000yo Madjedbebe archaeological site to investigate fish responses to past environmental change and to support future human and environmental resilience in the region.
