AGWA's Asian Institute of Contemporary Art - Korean Artist Focus
The Asian Institute of Contemporary Art is a new Gallery initiative that has received significant five-year funding from The Simon Lee Foundation. The intent of The Institute is to create cultural and artistic collaborations and connections between Asia and Western Australia. Korea has been identified as one of three key regions upon which to focus, informed by expanding cultural similarities and a burgeoning interest and appreciation of Korean film and music that provide a timely moment to raise the profile of contemporary Korean artists and expand knowledge into current visual arts practice. The Gallery will generate a cultural exchange program with artists and art institutions in the region to expose and develop immersive and experiential projects with artists articulated in digital engagement, acquisitions, artist commissions, curatorial projects, public programs and exhibitions. A priority in year three, is to physically bring the artists to AGWA to engage in dialogue with WA artists and to curate accompanying public programming and discussion. The Institute presents a unique opportunity for the Gallery to illuminate global thinking about Asian art, incubate a new generation of significant artists, and invest communication and capacity to disseminate art, new ideas and artists in Australia and the region.
