Grant Activity:
Building the mind: interplay of transcriptional and electrical activities in the self-assembly of cortical circuits in vivo
Purpose:
The early impact of nature and nurture influences in human brain wiring remains poorly understood due to a lack of ways to study embryonic development in naturalistic live models. We have established advanced new methods in an Australian marsupial that allow, for the first time, mechanistic studies of how genes and electrical activity interact to form precise circuits in the cerebral cortex. These unique opportunities can revolutionise the way we understand brain wiring in health and disease.
